Amabie "Coronabusters" T-shirt

In Stock | Ships from USA

A Manga University x Yukari exclusive

Amabie is a traditional Japanese yōkai (spirit) that uses its power to ward off disease and, as noted in such prestigious publications as Smithsonian Magazine, has become a modern symbol of the fight against the coronavirus.

In this hand-drawn design, Amabie and two young friends are adorned by the Japanese slogan Amabie to Issho Koronabasutazu, which translates to "Together With Amabie, Coronabusters!"

The first Amabie appeared in woodblock illustrations during Japan's Edo Period (1603-1868), when pictures of the spirit were shared and displayed in homes and businesses to keep disease at bay.

This Manga University exclusive T-shirt features original artwork by Japanese artist Yukari, whose work has been featured in galleries throughout Tokyo, including an upcoming exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
