Enter the Manga Moods Contest and Win a Personalized Critique

November 10th, 2008 - Manga University has teamed up with RateMyDrawings.com to sponsor the Manga Moods Drawing Contest! All you need to do is use RateMyDrawings.com's fun and free drawing tools to illustrate your favorite mood in manga style for your chance to win a Grand Prize package consisting of an autographed copy of Manga Moods, a Tachikawa all-in-one manga pen and a personalized art critique from one of Manga University's professional Japanese manga artists! Not only that — the winning artwork will be displayed proudly on this very page.

Competition Rules: Entries will be accepted from November 10th to December 14th and must be submitted using RateMyDrawings.com's website drawing tools. Entrants must have or register for a free RateMyDrawings.com account in order to submit their artwork.

Drawings must be original (no fan art) and include a written word or title describing the "mood" that your character conveys. We will use this to judge your artwork on how well you can draw this mood, so if your mood is "happy," make your character looks as happy as you can! For inspiration, check out Manga Moods! Our Campus Store page has five sample pages for inspiration.

Prizes: First Prize: A personalized critique of your drawing by one of Manga University's professional Japanese manga artists! (Critique can be of any drawing in any medium, not just the one for the competition).
A copy of Manga Moods signed by the author, Saori Takarai.
A Tachikawa all-in-one manga pen.

Runner Ups: Two runners-up will each receive an unsigned copy of Manga Moods.

New Tutorial Tuesday: How to Draw Ears!

October 21st, 2008 - One request that finds its way into our inbox very often here at MU is to make a tutorial on how to draw ears. You might think our students odd for requesting something that seems so basic, but we applaud their attention to detail.

Some beginner artists may think drawing ears is not important, or even unnecessary, but Koda Tadashi shows us in her new tutorial that being able to draw ears well can not only add to the expressiveness of your characters, but can really give your drawing a professional touch and set it apart from the crowd.

Volume 6 has got 80 more kanji for you to learn, bringing the series total to 480 characters (more than 500 if you include kana), and we're thrilled with how the book looks!
